labor day traditions

We like to look at Labor Day as a kick off to fall!! The air starts to get crisp, the beautiful fall colors start to pop up in the leaves, and the holidays are right around the corner!! These thoughts make us over the moon excited. Not to mention all of the cozy clothes and blankets that come out of hiding and take center stage. We wanted to share with you a few of our favorite things to do on Labor Day!!
 Host a bohemian dinner party for our friends and family
 Cool off with homemade rainbow snow cones.
Let's be honest it is still 90 degrees here in Southern California!
 Take a few minutes to hike around the mountains and collect flowers to fill all of
our empty vintage vases on our tables.
 Yes, even though it is Labor Day, we still like to squeeze in a little catch up work on our day off!!
 Throw on a flowing dress + leather hat. Enjoy a walk with the family.
Lay in the grass, watch the clouds, and blow bubbles.
Each bubble represents something or someone that we are thankful for!!

We hope that you are enjoying your Labor Day!!

bitter sweet

This past weekend, my beautiful sister, and co-author of this blog was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. According to her doctors, they think that she has had this for years!! Due to her extremely healthy and active lifestyle, she was able to manage it on her own, naturally. But her poor body couldn't keep up and finally broke down. Last night, as our family gathered for a birthday celebration for our older sister Katie, Mary was unpacking and testing her new "swag" as we call it. Of course, my parents were bickering over the instructions, while Mary had snot running out of her nose to my left and Katie was eating her birthday dinner alone to my right.  Meanwhile, I forgot about the birthday cake that was slowly burning in the oven. Needless to say it was a little bit of a stressful celebration!!

Anyways. It was incredibly heart breaking for me to watch the tears pour down Mary's face as our dad pricked her finger and injected her leg with insulin for the first time. I want to dedicate this post to Mary and all of the strong, beautiful people in the world living with this disease. Mary is the most compassionate, loving, and self-less sister in the world. This girl amazes and inspires me on a daily basis. She will be posting diabetic friendly recipes as well as tips + tricks that she uncovers throughout her exploration into the world of diabetes.

We love you Mimi

bathroom refresh

Spring means time to freshen up the little places around the house that get a bit neglected! Show your bathroom some love and you will find yourself and your family refreshed + relaxed. Here are a few things that I picked up to create our mystical oasis.
Go ahead and give your bathroom a facelift. . . it is worth every penny.
sechura bath towels. mod desert bath mat. demarcation shower curtain.
losada soap dish. feather inlaid knob all from ANTHROPOLOGIE of course :)

{BEFORE}
Here is what our bathroom looked like when we bought our place last summer. And here it is. . .

{AFTER}
 We created an inexpensive vanity using IKEA kitchen cabinets complete with a farmhouse sink for triple person teeth brushing action. The funky {not in a cool way} seventies mirror was given some cheap love by building a chunky frame around the edge. We love the vintage feel of the white  hexagon tiles surrounded by gray grout on the floors and of course the mod desert bath mat.
I grabbed this expanding mirror from IKEA as well. I can't put on mascara without it. Gotta love the blossoming branches too. . .
 Dinner plates can make great make-up stations. . . oh and that little ceramic jar was hand painted by my great grandma {it keeps all of my bobby pins safe}
Berlin's bath toys belong in a vintage metal bucket of course
{anyone with kids knows that this is only like a third of her toys}

XOXO

hair how to :: turban outfitting

We all love easy hair do's for those mornings when you hit the snooze three too many times!! All you need is a scarf and your two hands. . . sorry but you are going to have to put down your coffee mug for two minutes. Tie it around your head and get shuffling. Let your turban be the rock to your roll and the chic to your easy. Check out our turb-inspiration and how to. . .

Start with a great scarf, vintage ones are our faves! Fold the scarf in half creating a triangle. Begin folding the straight edge, keeping the width about 3 inches wide. Now you have your band to start your turban!

1. Place the center of the band at the back of your head where that little dent from your neck is. Bring the edges forward toward the center.

2. Tie the scarf in a double knot, as tight as your prefer.

3. Bring each loose end back around your head to the back.

4. Depending on the length of your scarf, either tie then tuck the ends or just tuck the ends into the band of the scarf.

:: Finish off with a WINK and a SMILE ::
